History: 17 – Working the North Shore

Reserve Mining Caboose 17 Erie Crossing, MN 1984 – Photo by John Hake

This photograph of our Reserve Mining Caboose #17 was captured by John Hake in 1984 at Erie Crossing, Minnesota. It is the only image in our collection of #17 as a working caboose. You can explore more of John’s wonderful photographs on flickr.

The Reserve Mining Railroad operated in the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota. The 47-mile route was used to transport crude taconite ore from the mines at Babbitt to a processing plant and shipping port on the North Shore of Lake Superior at Silver Bay.
