A recently converted VHS-C cassette offers a fascinating look into Rev. Ed Schleicher’s visionary plans to transform his newly acquired cabooses into a one-of-a-kind retreat. The video opens with Schleicher touring the railcars, sharing his ideas and aspirations for the project with a contractor, setting the stage for what would become a truly unique endeavor.
But the video wasn’t the only gem we uncovered. Along with it, we discovered Schleicher’s original sketches for the Caboose Falls renovation—drawn on the backs of napkins! These early, hand-drawn plans reveal the initial spark of creativity behind the project. Though the designs would evolve significantly over time, the essence of those first ideas remains clear.

The final vision was a clever transformation of the two cabooses: the transfer caboose (PLE 565) would become the kitchen and dining area, while the bay window caboose (PLE 518) would be reimagined as the living space, featuring a cozy bedroom, sitting room, and bathroom. This thoughtful layout would ensure that the retreat felt both functional and unique, with each caboose serving a distinct purpose.

Before any interior work could begin, however, the cabooses needed to be moved from their original location at the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie yard in McKees Rocks, PA, to New Castle, PA. There, at the Kasgro Rail facilities, the railcars underwent the renovation process, starting with sandblasting and steam cleaning to remove years of wear and grime. Afterward, fresh coats of paint revived their exteriors, restoring them to their former glory.

The interior craftsmanship was entrusted to a team of local Amish artisans, known for their exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality. Their skilled hands would transform the cabooses into something truly special, blending industrial charm with modern comfort, all while preserving the character of the railcars.
