Military Train passing Caboose Falls

It was a rather damp and rainy weekend at Caboose Falls. While this made it difficult to accomplish much from our to-do list, it was the perfect excuse to simply relax and enjoy the property as it was intended – a relaxing retreat from the distractions of daily life. I even managed to squeeze in a little reading about my favorite subject -cabooses.

For lunch, we had salad in 565 and for dinner, we grilled some burgers out on the platform. All this while watching the parade of trains roll through the valley.

It was during dinner that we heard a transmission from the defect detector, signaling the approach of an eastbound train. We grabbed our hiking sticks and headed down the ravine, being cautious not to slip on the rocks. As the train approached, we soon realized that it was not going to be an ordinary freight train, but rather a military train (Army). On board were heavy equipment trucks, tactical vehicles, aviation fuel tanks, and other gear. We’ve seen some interesting trains at Caboose Falls, but this one was by far the most thrilling.
