Minty Green

at the creek’s edge

Spring at Caboose Falls

As the daffodils start to fade, the mayapples are emerging and filling the forest floor. Additionally, mint plants have been spotted growing along the creek’s edge at the base of the ravine. Come summer, mint leaves will make a delicious addition to our sun-brewed sweet tea.

Work

A lot of groundskeeping work was done this week. We finished clearing bushes and fallen trees from along the front fence between the driveway and the ravine. We also trimmed back many of the bushes along the street. This should greatly improve visibility when exiting the property.

The mattress and foundation that were inside 518 have been removed. Taking out the fabric-covered items (upholstered chairs, mattresses and linens) has significantly reduced the damp and musty odor. The only piece of furniture remaining in the car is a wooden dresser near the entryway. It appears to have escaped damage from the damp conditions that affected so much of the car’s contents.

Our supply of campfire wood is growing steadily. Aurelius is taking the lead on this project, collecting dry timber with each trip into the ravine.

Additions

Most of our work at Caboose Falls has been about removing things, so it’s exciting to finally share some additions. The first is a new rocking chair, a gift from our family, which we placed in the atrium. It’s the perfect place to relax with a good book while enjoying the beautiful views of nature. The second addition is an old gumball vending machine that we couldn’t resist bringing home from the local Goodwill store. It might seem like an unlikely addition, but the machine gives Caboose Falls a fun touristy feel.

Railfanning

We caught a glimpse of CSX 1776 “The Spirit of our Armed Forces” locomotive as the second unit on a loaded coal train.
