Historic Spotlight: P&LE Bay Window Caboose 518

Pittsburgh & Lake Erie 518 Youngstown, OH 1985

This photograph showcases our Pittsburgh & Lake Erie bay window caboose, P&LE 518, as it appeared 11 years before making its way to Caboose Falls. Built in 1960 by the International Car Company in Kenton, Ohio, P&LE 518 was one of ten steel bay window cabooses ordered by the railroad. Delivered in striking red paint and adorned with New York Central System markings, these cabooses reflected a shift towards modern, durable designs during a transformative period in railroading history.

Exploring the Falls

We hiked down the main ravine to explore the base of our waterfall. Despite being careful, I fell a couple of times on the damp leaves. Along with a few old tires and some rusty buckets, we found several interesting artifacts including an old yellow railroad sign, part of a telegraph pole, and a couple of discarded shoes. Caboose Falls is an amazing place. – CPC
