Our transfer caboose was one of 20 all-steel transfer cabooses built by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in 1966 and 1967. These cars were built up from 40’ boxcar under-frames. Similar to the NYC/PC N9 standard transfer caboose design, the P&LE cabooses are easily spotted by the taller side window and the riveted carbody.
565 in Print: Cabins, Crummies, and Hacks
An image of our transfer caboose, PLE 565, appeared in Henry Maywald’s book Cabins, Crummies, and Hacks Vol. 5. This book is part of a series that catalogues, through stunning colorful photography, cabooses from railroads across the North American continent. Our caboose was featured on page 88 as an example of a Pittsburgh & Lake Erie N9 New York Central style transfer caboose.
