The Serpentarium (518)

The utility closet in P&LE 518, which was originally the car’s lavatory, could be better described as a serpentarium1. The recent discovery of a large snake skin confirms that these slithering intruders are still finding their way into the small space. Ironically, the most recent snake skin was found right next to an open bag of snake-a-way snake repellent.

We have no interest in providing a home to these serpents, so finding and sealing off their entry point is now a priority. To begin that process we needed a better look in the utility closet, and for that we needed to remove the water heater.

Under normal circumstances, moving a water heater wouldn’t be a particularly challenging task, but we’re not dealing with normal circumstances. Our tank had a clogged drain valve, so instead of moving a simple water tank, we also had to move the nearly 40 gallons of water trapped inside. Fortunately, my father-in-law was around to lend some muscle. Together, we managed to move the heater through the car, down the steps, and out to the platform. Once outside, we turned the tank upside down and drained the mirky water though the top. As for finding that snake entry point, the search continues.

Trail Work

The new trail from the parking area to 518 has been cleared of fallen timber and debris. It’s a little steep at the start so we’re looking at options to add a few steps. We also have some fill work to do where the trail crosses the well pipe. At completion, the new trail will greatly improve accessibility to 518 and 565.

Good and Plenty – Choo Choo Charlie

Anyone remember Choo Choo Charlie and the Good and Plenty Candy jingle? We heard the catchy tune for the first time this weekend.

Once upon a time there was an engineer
Choo Choo Charlie was his name, we hear.
He had an engine and he sure had fun
He used Good & Plenty candy to make his train run.
Charlie says “Love my Good & Plenty!”
Charlie says “Really rings my bell!”
Charlie says “Love my Good & Plenty!”
Don’t know any other candy that I love so well!

Good and Plenty candy was first produced in 1893 and is the oldest branded candy in the United States. There’s even a #NationalGoodAndPlentyDay celebrated each year on October 24th.

Railfanning

Watching coal trains roll past Caboose Falls is a great way to spend a weekend.
